FAQ
For our Gallery Wrapped Canvas
What is the process for printing?
We use Epson printers and genuine Epson Ultra-chrome inks for all of our prints. The inks will not fade for generations. It is rated to last 100 years. We also apply a UV inhibitor spray to seal the prints for free. The UV spray is excellent for better stretching and gives the canvas an elastic quality perfect for stretching it around the frame and preventing cracking.
What type of canvas do you use?
Our canvas is a high quality, water resistant poly-cotton blend. It has a PH neutral, acid free coating with a pure white point. This allows for greater consistence from print to print.
What type of printers and inks do you use?
We use the Epson 9800’s and the new state of the art Epson 11880’s that allow us to print up to 60″ wide by 480″ long. We also use the Epson Ultra-chrome K3 inks that are rated to last 80 to 100 years.
Are your canvas prints archival?
Absolutely. Every aspect of our prints is archival from the canvas and gesso to the ink and UV coating.
Do you consider your process giclee?
Yes, our process is giclee. Giclee is the process of making fine art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing.
What types of files can you use?
We prefer that you submit your images as jpegs when emailing us your files. Please make sure your file is under 15mb before uploading.
How do I need to prep my files for printing?
The first step is to set up your file correctly for printing. What ever your target size is on the front face of the canvas, you want to add an additional 4 inches for the height and the width. This will create a 2 inch border on each side for the wrap of the canvas.
Second, pull your guide lines from your rulers in Photoshop 2 inches from each edge. This will create your template for your target size. Anything inside the guides will be on the front face of the canvas; anything outside the lines will be the wrap of the canvas.
For example, if you are ordering a 16×20, the file would need to be set up as a 20×24 at 100 dpi(ppi).
What size file do I need?
We need you to size your images to your target size at 100 dpi. Do not forget to add the additional 4 inches to create a 2 inch border on each side for the wrap of the canvas!
What size file do you need?
We need you to size your images at actual size at 100dpi. However, don’t worry because we open every file in Photoshop to check size and dpi before printing. Your images will be safe with us!
Why 100 dpi?
The nature of printing on canvas with ink-jet technology allows us to create extremely sharp prints from lower resolution files. We use the best RIP (Raster Image Processing) software for final output and sizing. 100 dpi files work perfect for both quality and work-flow.
What file format should I submit?
We prefer a high level jpeg (Quality 12).
Will my image be pixelated?
Absolutely not! As long as we start with a clear image, we can make it as large as you like without pixelation. If your file is crisp going in, it will be crisp coming out, as long as the dpi is correct. We need your file to be sized at actual size at 100dpi (a 16×20 will be sized at 20×24 for a gallery wrap).
What type of adjustments do I need to make to my file(s) for canvas prints?
Treat your files as you would for your paper prints. If you do all your color correcting and adjustments yourself, by all means treat your files for Oversized Canvas Prints the same.
Can I do my own Color Correcting?
If you choose to color correct your own images we highly recommend previewing your images on a correctly calibrated monitor. We do offer color correction at no additional cost. If you chose to have us correct your file, our trained printing experts will print for best possible color and density. Color and density is subjective and prints may appear different under varied lighting conditions. Reprints due to color and density will be reviewed on a per print basis and may, at our request, require a match paper print to be supplied to insure satisfaction.
How do I change the dpi of my image without re-sampling the file (pixels)?
Once you open your image in Photoshop, go to Image/Image Size. In your Image Size window, make sure the re-sampled Image box is unchecked. Then change your resolution to 100 dpi.
Do I need to re-sample my file(s) before ordering?
No, you do not need re-sample your file(s). Our RIP(Raster Image Processing) software will take care of that for you.
If the frame is an 1 1/2″, why do I need to add 2″ on each side to my file?
We have you add 2 inches on each side because a 1/2″ from each side will wrap the back of the frame where it is stapled and assembled.
If I order a split panel, how do I need to set up the file?
Setting up a split panel can be tricky. First, determine your overall target size for the front face of the canvas.
Second, decide how you want your image to be split. You can split your image into even panels or uneven panels. Once you have decided how many panels you want, pull guides at each dimension where the panel will split.
Third, remember to add an additional 4 inches to your height and width for the outside wrap of your image.
Fourth, pull guides two inches from each guide that you placed to split the image. Then crop each panel of the image using the adjusted guides.
Oversized Canvas Prints does offer a split image set-up service for a flat $25.00.
What color space do you use for prints?
The Simply Painted service gives your image subtle oil painted look.
What are the Digital Painting Services?
The Digital Painting Services involve altering your image by manipulating the pixels in the digital file to achieve a painted look. This is done by an artist using Corel Painter X software.
How do I know if my color is going to match what I see on my screen?
First, verify that your monitor is calibrated with a professional calibration device. This is a very important step. If your monitor is calibrated, you will not see much shift in color. Most of the color shift occurs when your monitor is not calibrated. If you are nervous about color, you are more than welcome to request a test print for a small fee.
